Happy Second Birthday Journalized

Wow! I can hardly believe it but Journalized is two years old! Especially has it has been negelected for a large part of the last 12 months 🙁 I am slowly getting into a state where I feel I can write here again.
In celebration there is now a ‘two years ago’ section on the left!

Twelve months ago:

  • Matt and I were working on WordPress but had not released anything. There has been incredible progress since then.
  • I was having trouble with my new hosting service for zed1.net. No change there then: just this month I have dumped that service for another!
  • and my simple page counter had just passed the 250,000 mark. I think it will pass the 1 million mark before the end of this month!

I’m back

I’m back! A simple search for mike on Google has me back at number 7. This just 7 days after I failed to appear in the top 900! I’m back at number 1 for ‘mike little’ too.
Both of these results are with the new URI.
All this thanks to good old Google honouring the 301 return code and some very sophisticated redirection code turning, for example, a request for http://zed1.com/b2/archives/p/986/more/1/c/1/Happy-Birthday-Chloe (my customised b2 SE frendly URIs) into a permanent redirect to WordPress‘ cruft-free URI https://journalized.zed1.com/archives/2003/12/26/happy-birthday-chloe/

PS: I’m still number 1 on MSN at the old URI

Happy Belated Birthday WordPress

Matt remembered the birth of what turned into WordPress was just over 1 year ago. We have come a long way.

Matt,
If you’re serious about forking b2 I would be interested in contributing. I’m sure there are one or two others in the community who would be too. Perhaps a post to the B2 forum, suggesting a fork would be a good starting point.

New WordPress, New URI

It’s done!
I’ve upgraded to WordPress 1.0.1. At the same time I’ve removed the ‘b2’ from the URI. The official URI for this journal is now https://journalized.zed1.com . Please update your links, bookmarks, favourites, and blogrolls. Everything should get redirected automatically but if you see any errors, please leave a comment.

Everything seems to be about 20 times faster at the moment. I’m not sure whether that’s because I am using WordPress’ mod_rewite-based cruft-free URIs (as opposed to PHP parsing of the URI) or because I’m running off a new copied database (DB performance seemed to be a big factor previously).

It Feels Good To Be 2

After reading of Matt‘s success at getting to be the #3 Matt in the world, I thought I’d better check my ranking.

I’d not checked for a while (and it was Matt who made me check in the first place); when I first checked I gave up looking after page 20 of Google’s search results meaning I wasn’t in the top 200. A while ago I’d made it to number 14.

Today I am the number two ‘mike’ in all the world according to Google (that is the whole world isn’t it?). Number 2 out of about 20 million! Pretty impressive.

And just for fun when I upgrade to WordPress 1.0.1 I’ll be changing my URL! Only slightly, but it should be enough to completely break my Google standing!

Let’s hope the very comprehensive redirect script at the old location will help.

Update: I’m also number 1 ‘mike’ on MSN (out of 12 million)

Zendor Standards Compliant Website Launched

I am very pleased to announce that the company I work for, Zendor, have just published their new website www.zendor.com.

The reason I am so very, very pleased is that it is valid XHTML 1.0 Strict. More than that, the site claims Level Triple-A Conformance to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WAI-AAA).

We have designed our site to meet the W3C ‘AAA’ standards recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium, which has been set up to promote world wide standards of access and to encourage wider use of the internet.

Unfortunately Bobby disagrees, but the priority 2 error seems to be a Bobby error and the priority 3 is being looked at.

Further, the site is extremely search engine friendly; check out some of the URIs

I wish I could claim to have had a hand in the production of this site but I cannot. My good friend Steve P took care of the standards compliance, and our design team managed to produce a good looking functional site without a single table! I can only claim to a little help with the occasional CSS problem and just about three years of solid evangelising for this level of standards compliance.

Well done to everyone involved.

Update: Steve P has pointed out that For compliance, two automatic checks are required – the two I [Steve] used were Cynthia Says and LIFT, I must confess to not having remembered the former and never heard of the latter. He also mentions that some consider Bobby to be unreliable. I do now remember that when it changed hands (wasn’t it hosted at the BBC at one point?) it became less stable.
