Just after I was taking Jamie through how to use her new blog, the zed1.net web server went down again.
It’s getting to be a real pain now. I’m going to have to consider changing hosting service. So soon after I started with this one too. It’s looking like it wasn’t worth going for the cheaper option.
I know that at the price I’m paying I cannot expect 99.999% uptime (which is less than 6 minutes downtime a year) but I don’t expect downtime every day!

Another Blog Done
Phew! That’s another blog completed! There is no content yet so I’m not going to announce it. I’ve got a couple more tweaks to do, then I’ll invite the world 🙂
Another Day At Home
I’ve now spent the last three days at home, not working. I’ve spent time taking Jamie to and from school, lots of domestic stuff, ironing, cleaning, making meals, etc. Well, not lots exactly, more like the bare minimum required! I’ve also caught up on reading my magazines, and finished a book or two.
I’ve finished that blog I was working on. Now I’ve got another one to do!
Jan’s back is improving every day. We’re hoping that she will be ok by weekend and I can go back to work on Monday.
She’s also doing really well without cigarettes; 11 days now!
Site Down
Damn, this site has been down for at least 9 hours! I’ve actually managed to miss blogging for a day! Oh no! 🙁
Strangely, the symptoms were similar to the outage I had recently with zed1.net. The server was still up, ftp worked, SSH worked but this time it looked like the virtual hosting disappeared. I managed to find some other sites hosted on this server showing the same symptoms.
Anyway it’s back now, and I forgotten what I was going to say last night.
Blogs
I’ve been working on and off on yet another design for a new blog for a family member. I’m hoping to get it finished tonight or by tomorrow at the least.
I’ve also had success with Power Phlogger. It could probably do with some more charts, but I quite like the results I’m getting from it. I’ll probably start rolling it out to the other blogs I’m hosting soon.
Jan Still Not Smoking
Jan has now completed her eighth day without a cigarette! She is doing really well. With her back problems keeping her bored in bed most of the time, she has managed to keep her resolve and stay off them.
Well done Jan!
Working From Home and Their Loss Not Mine
I worked from home again today. I’d sent an email late last night informing my manager that this would be the case. I even offered to participate in a meeting I was going to otherwise miss by telephone.
After dropping Jamie off at school and back home checking Jan was OK, I logged into the office network and filled in my time sheet for last week.
Now, because I had been dropping Jamie off at school in the morning, collecting her in the afternoon, looking after Jan as much as she would let me, and various other things like making the odd meal; I hadn’t managed to work a full seven and a half hours on Thursday and Friday. So I filled in my time sheet appropriately. I put down five and a half hours for each day.
Note, I could have lied about my time and claimed I’d done full days, but that doesn’t do any one any good: neither me for not having work to show for that amount of work; nor the company for paying me for work I didn’t do; nor the client for being billed for work they haven’t had; so I was honest.
I received a reply in return which simply said:
Can you make sure that you do 37.5 (hours) when working from home.
thanks
and signed by my line manager.
My response:
Unfortunately with taking Jamie to school, Picking her up again, making meals, looking after Jan, etc., I cannot.
As hard as it may be to believe, with the amount of unpaid overtime I have done in the past, my family comes before work.
I shall therefore take the next fews days off as sick leave/ compassionate leave/ holiday, whatever, to avoid disappointing people and upsetting the books.
I’ll let you know nearer the time when I can return to work.
Who lost out do you think?
Bloggy Stuff
I’ve been doing some tidying up of my B2 code tonight. Nothing visible, just minor improvements. I’ve also implemented visitor tracking to give me some useful statistics. I’m using Power Phlogger, I’ll see how it goes and then probably roll it out to my hostees on zed1.net. As it is hosted on zed1.net it should be much quicker than stat4all that they are using.
I need to do a new release of B2 Link Manager soon; I’ve accumulated several bug fixes now. But I want to implement a new feature first. Hopefull I’ll have it finished soon.
