Worthwhile Causes

I’ve added a new section to the bottom of the left hand sidebar; ‘worthwhile causes’.
This will contain links to campaigns, charities, and other organisations I think you should be aware of.

Please do your best to support these worthwhile causes. It isn’t always easy: there are so many. I know I try my best.

Busy Day

Gonna be a busy day today. Anthony is coming up to visit. He’ll be bringing his Commonwealth Games medals with him. It should be a good family gathering.

Apparently the weather is supposed to brighten up a little, but judging by the grey clouds around now, that doesn’t look too promising.

Meeting

I spent most of today in an incredibly long meeting! It started around 11 this morning, and I got out about 5 this afternoon!

Unusually, I felt it was quite productive.

BlogChalking Problems

I’ve had a couple of people tell me they had problems viewing my site yesterday. I think I’ve tracked it down to my BlogChalk icon.
It looks like Daniel’s site was being slow for some reason and this was causing the right hand column to be rendered up against the left hand column underneath the centre column. Not correct at all! I commented out the link and the problem went away.

Anyway, it seems to have recovered now so it’s back in: bottom right of the right hand column.

Boring Day

Had a pretty boring day at work today. Several meetings, and not much of anything interesting. A couple of bugs to look at one of which turned out to be a client data issue. The other is probably a client data issue.

Just found out before I left this evening that tomorrow I’ve got to sit in on a meeting with a new client (remember the tight time scales project) to help them understand why they can’t have lots of new features and have it delivered on time.

So that’s going to knock back several other things I was going to be doing.

Oh hum.

Lord Of The Rings

Just finished watching The Lord Of The Rings DVD. Excellent!

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It really is a most wonderful translation from book to film. I think probably one of the best (although The Abyss came close). I can barely wait for the next one.

All in all, whilst there were obviously things from the book that could not be translated to film (at least and still have it as a commercial success), it really was a good effort. I particularly liked the way the history was summed up at the beginning but with more detail supplied later. I also liked Ian McKellen’s Gandalf. I remember when I first realised who was playing Elrond; Hugo Weaving (Mr Smith in The Matrix), I was astounded: I’d kind of pictured all the Elves in the way Legolas was portrayed (by Orlando Bloom): blonde and pretty (and that’s just the guys). But, of course, the 3000 year old lord of Rivendell would be a strong, wise, and slightly sinister character. It worked for me.

I did notice that the UK video version has been re-classified as a PG (Parental Guidance) rating: I’m sure it was at least a 12 at the cinema. I didn’t notice anything in particular which had been cut, but then again it is almost nine months since I saw it last.

I have to disagree with Chriscomments, and say that the ending was just right in terms of following the book.
