New Toy!

I finally managed to find myself a cheap digital camera!

I got myself a Vivitar Vivicam 20

  • 640 x 480 Resolution
  • PC Video camera mode (13 fps CIF)
  • Focus Free
  • Auto Flash
  • 8 MB Internal Memory
  • LCD Status display
  • USB Connectivity
  • Optical viewfinder
  • Auto white balance and auto exposure
  • 10 second self-timer and tripod socket
  • Auto power-off (2 minutes)

The internal memory is Flash so it shouldn’t lose any pictures if the batteries fail, unlike some models in this price range. I’ve not played with it extensively yet, but I have had it working as a webcam. I’ll take it to work with me tomorrow and get some daylight pictures.

It claims it keeps the images as BMPs which means no compression. Not good for fitting many images on the internal memory, but as the quality is not that good to start with it’ll help. Whilst the supplied software, Arcsoft’s PhotoImpression 3, saves to disk as JPEG, I can transfer directly from the camera into Paintshop Pro, presumably uncompressed.

Another One Gone

It’s starting to look like an epidemic! Another blog related portal site has closed: GBlogs.

In light of my rapidly changing life and increasing commitments over the next few months, I’ve decided to close GBlogs.
I hope you’ve enjoyed using the portal over the past couple of years, and best wishes for the future.

That’s the second one in the last couple of weeks. Adam Walker’s excellent B2 Dev site was the other.

Ok everyone, im considering a closure of the b2 dev site, nothing definite yet tho…

Although strictly speaking Adam hasn’t finally closed the B2 Dev site. If he does, I’ll misss it. It was a pretty good resource.

Another Two Earthquakes!

We’ve just had another two earthquakes or at least tremors. This time I felt them both. 🙂

tremor readingThe epicentre was within a mile of me. I wasn’t in the office, which being nine floors up got quite a shaking. Nothing too dangerous, but the people in the office said it was quite worrying.

I spoke to Jan at home, and she said that all the chimes and various dangling things in Jamies’s room all set off jangling. Jamie thought it was quite exciting!

The earlier story at the BBC news site has been updated.

Earthquake In England Again!

Wow! Another Earthquake. This time centred on Manchester. Much closer to me this time. But, alas I missed it again. 🙁

This time I was on a bus and I’m sure wouldn’t have been able to distinguish it from one of the many potholes on route!

Here is a BBC news story about it. The time is wrong on this one though. It happened nearer to 8:35.

Update: Apparently last month’s earthquake was upgraded in it’s intentsity.

NTL Proxy Servers

NTL’s default transparent caching proxy server is still broken! Has been since midday yesterday.
Thanks to Robin Walker‘s excellent Cable Modem Troubleshooting Tips I’ve been able to adjust the browsers on all the machines to get round it.

I realise that what I should have done is changed my Squid proxy on the firewall to use one of the ones that’s still working. That way none of the browsers would have needed changing. Plus I’d still have local caching.

Update: For those looking for a proxy. I have set up an experimental proxy here
