Terry Pratchett – Night Watch

I finished the new Terry Pratchett book, Night Watch, the other day. It’s another classic. What a fantastic story. The guy is a real genius.
This is another story around the night watch of Ankh Morpork (no surprise there!), but very much centred around commander Sam Vimes. I already loved this character, but I think this is Sam’s best story yet.

What A Week!

What a week I’ve had at work! It’s been constant interruptions and jumping from thing to another. Several crises came and went this week. I attended a meeting and learned some very disappointing information!
On the bright side project ‘Dandy’ is nearing completion, although I did learn of yet another change that needs making because the other half of the system has been implemented differently from the specification!

I’m back on 24×7 support this weekend so I shan’t be wandering too far from my PC 🙂

Compressed Pages

Whilst reading an interesting article about XHTML 1.1 and content type negotiation over at Dive Into Mark, I noticed he mentioned gzip-compressing and featured a link to a gzip encoding checker at leknor.com.
So without hesitation I (g)zipped over there and popped my largest page into the box: The results were encouraging; Content-Length: 42350. When I loaded the page in my browser and saved it to disk it was a massive 243 KB (249,232 bytes)! BTW, that page has an incredible 846 links on it!
So, the gzipped output is a mere 17% of the original size! That’s a huge saving in download time. Recommended!

Find out more about gzip, mod_gzip, and which browsers support it.

Linkin Park: Cold Turkey

I’ve finally done it! It’s been three whole days now since I listened to Linkin Park’s Reanimation!
After listening to it at least once every single day since some time in August, I’ve finally gone three whole days without!

Hmmm, now I’ve mentioned it, I want to listen to it again. *Waaah*

Too Busy

I’ve not really been posting much recently, at least not any thing personal for the journal side of this blog. This is mainly ‘coz I’ve been busy with my two hacks; I’ve been having a lot of IM conversations with B2 users, helping them out; plus I’ve been very busy at work.
I’ve not been updating the ‘currently reading’, or ‘currently hearing’ sections either!

I really must try to get it together!
