A Good Day

Had a good day at work today. Did a hand over of my development to the other guys on the team, and did lots of bitty code management type things. Code reviews, CVS branch merging, etc. Also had time for people’s queries without having to wish they would go away and let me get on with what I’m in the middle of.
On the other hand it was TOO HOT! Again! ‘Only’ reached 85F today, plus I went to work in knee length shorts so it wasn’t as bad as yesterday, but still too hot!

Too hot!

It’s too hot here! 🙁
I’ve been at my desk for half an hour and it’s already 87.6F or 30.9C.
Too too hot! 🙁 🙁 🙁

Update 12 noon: It reached 88.4F but is now down to 85.8F. Still too hot!
Update 4:30PM: It’s back up to 87.3F (30.7C). Too, too hot!🙁

Work, work, work

Another very bitty day today! The one thing I had to do today, which I managed to start this morning, I never got chance to finish it! I’ve lurched from one thing to another all day long. Production problems, “Can you just do this?”, “Don’t forget to ring that guy from…”, “I know you’re busy but…”, “I need you to drop everything and write something to…” (this one from the big boss), “Can you stay late?”, and “Can you come in early in the morning?” Phew! And all this on top of the fact that the one thing I set out to do is not the thing I’m down on the plan to be doing anyway! I think I must have hit about 6 levels of interruption today (interrupted to do X which was interrupted to do X which was interrupted to do…).

And I love it! I really do.

And there’s not really anyone else who can do it. At least not as quickly, or get down to the root of a problem as quickly, or figure out the right fix, or… I’m not an arrogant person, but I have at least a decade more experience than the rest of the people on my team. I’m good at what I do.

So much so that I’m going to ask about redefining my role in the team tomorrow. We’ll see how well that goes down. But that’s after I’m in early to work some more on this production problem. And that’s after I’m just going to look at a couple of things tonight!

A busy Bitty day

A strange day today.
As I arrived in work there was a problem with the production system. So we spent a couple of hours scratching our heads trying to figure out what was wrong. In the end we moved the code over to the backup server area and it worked from there. It had to be an environmental/configuration problem but nothing was known to have changed 😕
I then spent nearly three hours doing a ‘quick ten minute job’! In between, I just seemed to be constantly responding to different request to ‘just look at this’, ‘can you help me with that’, and ‘can we go over this design for the other’. 🙄
In all a very ‘bitty’ day.

Still Poorly

Well, I still felt rough when I woke up this morning. But I had to go in work to brief someone before an important meeting. I needed to make sure that we weren’t taking on too much work for a new project with tight deadlines. But I wasn’t well and went home before lunchtime.
You know, it used to be that a cold didn’t make me stay off work. I guess its my age 🙁

Working from home/ broadband woes

I’ve been working from home today. I stayed out of the office coz I’ve got a bad cold. It kept me awake half the night. 🙁
So I phoned in sick, but then worked from home anyway. That is until about 3PM when my broadband went down. 🙁
After much re booting of cable boxes and firewalls, it intermittently came back. Finally settling back to ‘on’ about 6pm.
I have no idea what was wrong. At one point, there was no light on the external NIC in the firewall, but I could ping the outside world from the firewall. Nothing else on the network could see the outside world though. Weird!

I Passed!

Yahoo! I passed my Java Certified Programmer Exam today. Go me! I got 81% which is, apparently, well above average.
It was a lot harder than I was expecting. Even some of the questions on the basic stuff required a lot of thought. In comparison every practice exam was much easier. Something to be aware of if you’re taking it yourself. Still I got the highest score today, and fourth or fifth highest of all from work who have taken it so far.
